Following a chance meeting at a lunch table at the ECB Coaches Conference in Warwick University, the idea of an Austria v Hungary international friendly turned in to reality on May 1st. Austria are 2 divisions ahead of Hungary so the main idea was to go and get some cricketing lessons from our neighbours and to find out just where we stand. They taught us well; only time will tell how well we listened! It is fair to say that the Austrian win was rather thoroughly deserved, and Hungary returned with many firm pointers on what needs improving as we target moving up through the ICC divisions as quickly as possible. We came back without catching any serious illnesses, a cold, or even too many cricket balls. The best news is that dropped catches and too many wides are skills that we know we have the talent and drive to overcome. Congratulations to Ed Allnutt for a classy half-century-not-out having opened the batting, and to 15 year old Andras Lovitt Danks for easily being the best performer with the ball and in the field. He deserved a 5-for but wasn’t supported by his fielders. Proposals are for Austria to visit Hungary for a return match at the end of the season. Thank you to Austria for their wonderful hosting, including a fantastic lunch (that happened after we dropped all the catches, no excuse there…).
